On 5 June 2026, UNESCO included Lake Shkodra in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This international recognition highlights the ecological, landscape and cultural importance of one of the region’s most significant freshwater ecosystems, shared by Albania and Montenegro.
From a protected-area perspective, the designation brings increased responsibility for coordinated transboundary management, continuous biodiversity monitoring and the participation of local communities. It also supports sustainable tourism and economic activities that preserve the lake’s natural values. These priorities closely align with the objectives of the EU4Nature project to strengthen protected-area management and support Albania’s alignment with European nature conservation standards.
Meanwhile, Albania, Greece and North Macedonia have begun cooperating on a joint nomination of the Prespa region for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed natural and cultural property. The process will require shared scientific documentation, mapping and a coordinated management approach, once again placing transboundary cooperation at the centre of nature conservation.
